Hema Varkey
Founding partner, Pittsburgh office
Hema has spent her whole career on the worker's side of the table.
Hema started Varkey & Kovalchick after years of representing steelworkers, nurses and drivers at hearings across the region. She grew up above her parents' grocery in Pittsburgh's East End, where half the customers worked shifts, and she still answers her own phone.
She handles the firm's long-running claims: occupational illness, hearing loss and injuries that change what someone can do for the rest of their life.

How Hema works a long claim
An illness from work rarely has a single bad day. Hema starts with your work history, job by job, and finds the doctor who can connect it to what you're living with now. She expects these cases to take time and tells you so at the start.
